God's Acre

March 4, 2007 - 11:58pm Submitted by Karl DeBisschop
by Witter Bynner

Because we felt there could not be
A mowing in reality
So white and feathery-blown and gay
With blossoms of wild caraway,
I said to Celia, "Let us trace
The secret of this pleasant place!"

When I am dead and Sister to the Dust

March 5, 2007 - 12:10am Submitted by Karl DeBisschop
by Elsa Barker

When I am dead and sister to the dust;
When no more avidly I drink the wine
Of human love; when the pale Proserpine
Has covered me with poppies, and cold rust
Has cut my lyre-strings, and the sun has thrust
Me underground to nourish the world-vine, —
Men shall discover these old songs of mine,
And say: This woman lived — as poets must!

by John Donne

Come live with me, and be my love,

The Painted Ceiling

March 11, 2007 - 9:46pm Submitted by Karl DeBisschop
by Amy Lowell

My Grandpapa lives in a wonderful house
With a great many windows and doors,
There are stairs that go up, and stairs that go down,
And such beautiful, slippery floors.

But of all of the rooms, even mother's and mine,
And the bookroom, and parlour and all,
I like the green dining-room so much the best
Because of its ceiling and wall.

Petals

March 12, 2007 - 10:53pm Submitted by Karl DeBisschop

by Amy Lowell

Life is a stream
On which we strew
Petal by petal the flower of our heart;
The end lost in dream,
They float past our view,
We only watch their glad, early start.

The Breaking (The Lord God speaks to a youth)

March 14, 2007 - 6:01am Submitted by Karl DeBisschop
by Margaret Steele Anderson

Bend now thy body to the common weight!
(But oh, that vine-clad head, those limbs of morn!
Those proud young shoulders I myself made straight!
How shall ye wear the yoke that must be worn?)
